ALBUM REVIEW: Ewïg Frost – Aïn’t No Saïnt

Austrian Blackened Speed Metallers EWIG FROST are back with their 4th album. Out on April 30th via Discos Macarras and Motorpunk Records.

D-beats and sleazy riffs jump right into the action with a powerful groove, maniacal vocals and overall old school vibe. The punk edge to the Speed Metal annihilation certainly adds a certain bite to the music from the very onset with its malicious yet catchy attitude that is immediately contagious. The lead work adds that bluesy touch that Motorhead always nailed, giving more depth to the primal onslaught of battery. There are some slightly doomy moments of deserted atmosphere that remind me of Orange Goblin while the Metal mania doesn’t lose momentum. The groove of the bass adds funk to the material but in a way that underlines the slower riffs nicely. Definitely a decent start to things.

The energy is quite interesting on this album from its speedier moments to the almost stoner vibes, something one doesn’t often see collide in this way, yet strangely works. If you like your Metal to contain a lot of blues and sleaze, this is going to be ideal. Personally I really dig the style but feel there could be a bit more ferocity to the metallic side of things which can gander along and wander off on tangents quite a lot. Aside from that, the record really does nail an old school style that isn’t as common as the typical Speed Metal or traditional stuff, which certainly deserves respect. All in all, this is definitely a good bit of Heavy Metal that is the perfect accompaniment to a hot summers day or a long drive rather than total mayhem and carnage.

A fun, easy to get into slice of punk-tinged Speed Metal full of attitude and old school groove.

Rating: 7 out of 10.
