ALBUM REVIEW: Heavy Sentence – Bang To Rights

UK Speed Metal mob HEAVY SENTENCE are back to follow their 2 killer 7″ releases with a debut full length. Set for release via Dying Victims Productions and Crypt Of The Wizard on May 28th.

Firing right in with crashing cymbals and blistering melodies topped by gorgeously sleazy soloing, the album wastes no time in kicking up a storm of pure Heavy Metal excellence. The vocals join with a raspy grit that perfectly suits the evil speed inferno of wicked riffing, punctual drums and an overall contagiously triumphant atmosphere. These stalwarts of the UK underground tragically lost a member in 2019, the talented Mike Woods to be specific, but it is clear they intend on honouring his memory and legacy by performing furious Heavy Metal of high calibre. There is no denying the atmosphere of return to battle that is palpable in the air as these victorious anthems begin with such a formidable couple of tracks than soar into life with a vengeance. Bang or be banged!

Continuing with the monolith of momentous Heavy Metal, these unfaltering maniacs do not drop the ball once, blending some punky touches into their high-speed artillery, it is obvious why the band has accumulated a cult respect of their EPs and live shows (one I witnessed, and those who recall my review know I was impressed). Totally ripping rhythmic grooves entwined with anthemic choruses that give plentiful headroom for some phenomenal guitar leads yet keep things primal, this is the overall feel of the record. I was especially pleased to hear the comeback of “Edge Of The Knife” which is a real anthem for those who are familiar with the band. Giving us dynamics with these sections tying into a thrashing blend of pure 80s worship, there is not time nor lacking energy for the record to become dull. The blade cuts with precision and untamed, boundless excitement from the band whom punch with vitriol, time and time again.

Spanning just under 40 minutes, this album is not one that overstays its welcome, nor wastes time on pointless dawdling. With mighty blows they strike on each of the 10 pieces of carnage, delivering us a statement of the strength in the underground Heavy Metal world, words they back up with actions both on record and in a live setting with no remorse. As we draw to the conclusion of the album, it is clear these veterans of obscure but fantastic Heavy Metal are going nowhere, they deserve their place in the subterranean movement and more, if this album does not force you to headbang ’til your skull is fragmented, then frankly I don’t think much will.

A crushing debut that I do not see can be bound by trend nor time, delving right back into the NWOBHM days of old with a refreshed energy that is totally killer. A pure, untainted and brilliant example of the bands abilities that certainly do justice to the EPs and show they have plenty more to say. Rest in peace Mike, your brothers have done you and your legacy proud on this slab of unwavering Metal mayhem.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10.
