ALBUM REVIEW: Satanize – Baphomet Altar Worship

Portuguese War Metal barbarians SATANIZE return with their 6th full length album of blasphemous destruction. Out via Helter Skelter Productions and Regain Records on January 20th.

A horde of destructive drumming and fearsome riffs bellow into life with the full bestial force of classic War Metal. Decimating all that is holy, the Impurath style vocals over a riveting display of primitive, high-octane instrumentals is certainly a solid example of Bestial Black Metal excellence. Fiercely scathing in their old school styled attack, there is nothing easy about this listen, as one would expect from the genre. This is pure obliterating disdain conjured in monolithically brutal fashion with nothing but goat-worshipping soundscapes to destroy the eardrums. Killer production in a raw manner allows the rampant morbidity to be heard as a united roar of devastation with no need for polished, clean-cut mixing. This is certainly a ferocious slab of Extreme Metal malice.

From the relentless drums to the storming riffs and maniacal vocals, no respite is found in this astonishingly energetic, passionate conjuration of occult barbarism. Though perhaps not as known as the Canadian, South American, Asian and Finnish counterparts, these Portuguese miscreants have just as high quality in their tempests of blasphemy. This is the kind of War Metal that is totally sincere, nothing comedic or false, only pure aggression and Satanic might. Stoic soundscapes allow the decimating hellfire to achieve untamed, feral and christ-extinguishing levels of sonic impurity. Inarguably some of the most punishing material from this band whose humbly raw beginnings have evolved into an unstoppable monstrosity of ravenous Bestial Metal.

There is little variety on this record, again something one should be expecting with the genre at hand. Satanize choose a far more concise, cutting and utterly savage method of Extreme Metal that fans of Black Witchery, Blood Chalice and Conqueror will undoubtedly adore. While War Metal has been somewhat tainted with plentiful mockeries in recent years, Satanize certainly deliver the black flame in a pure and unfiltered manner that demands respect. At just under 30 minutes, this short slab of church-demolishing Black Metal is an immovable titan of sound, dense and unforgiving. Those who can withstand the punishing listen will be rewarded with an ultimately marvellous experience of Bestial Black Metal greatness. Perhaps not the most original nor groundbreaking, there is still not a sense of mediocrity or cheap knock-offs, this still retains that inarguably rampant spirit found in the best War Metal.

A crushing new effort that is unmissable for War Metal maniacs. Satanize are a truly exciting and dangerous sounding example of this primitive genre still offering strong and unfaltering conjurations of sacrilegious violence. -8/10
