EP REVIEW: Savagery – Off The Ruins…

French Speed Metallers SAVAGERY dropped their debut EP recently via Dying Victims Productions. I decided to revisit and review this 4 track slab of thrashing madness.

Driving right in feedback dissipates into a hammering drum assault and array of ferocious riffing, this is certainly a barbaric and supreme display of old school Speed Metal. The vocals wail with equal savagery to the marvellously furious instrumentals to concoct a tempest of formidably fast and unholy sounds that have such a gnarly bite to the primitive yet blistering onslaught. Slower sections add a bit of atmospheric prowess to the gloriously brazen release while fantastic shredding speeds things up into a daunting storm of punishing hellfire. Taking some inspiration from Norwegian titans like Deathhammer, Condor, Aura Noir and Toxik Death, this has that seem relentless energy and passion that is always at the heart of good Speed Metal. Only go ahead if you are prepared to bang your head ’til it falls off.

Each of the 4 tracks is a stoic and immovably tough slice of fury that together make a complete and restless EP that is not for the faint of heart. Utilising only speedy musicianship and blasphemous songwriting, the heaviness is all in the sincerity of their riffs, blasts and screeches as we are barraged with nothing but remorseless Extreme Metal massacring. Plentiful grooves and spiteful twists take us down a pathway to the underworld in true 80s style with unholy, impactful brilliance. The soaring sonic excellence of this release makes it easy to get into the groove and be pulled into the frenzied assault of all things pure, delving into the most macabre and evil Speed Metal that one could hope for. Tight but certainly not polished, warm bass, crisp guitars, pounding drums and howling vocals work in united aggression without the need for a lame over-produced execution, thriving on pure maniacal energy alone.

An absolutely crushing debut EP that has infinite potential to spread blasphemous Speed Metal violence to all whom dare blast this concoction of demonic violence at full volume. -8.5/10
