Brazilian Black-Death-Thrash extremists SPEEDKILLER are here with their debut album. Set for release via Edged Circle Productions on December 11th. Time for some old school blasphemous violence.
The intro is suitably horror soundtrack feeling with bats, crows and organs to set a morbid mood for whatever ferocity lies in wait. Evil riffs churn in over crashing cymbals, immediately firing into a barbaric assault of pure old school bestial Metal warfare. Taking the likes of Sarcofago, Vulcano and Mystifier as huge inspiration, there is nothing but primal, feral and unrelenting aggression in Extreme Metal form to be found here. Spectral lead riffs give some atmosphere while the cymbal work and double kicks keep a monstrous flow to the rhythms. With such fury and a daunting feel of pure malice, the vocalist keeps the horror alive by adding haunting howls and snarls to the grim instrumental savagery with equally dark and intense performances from the whole band. The soloing is simplistic but incredibly effective, once again utilising the tried and tested old school methods which fit the release perfectly. While I knew this would be nothing new or groundbreaking, it is damned enjoyable and unholy as I had hoped.
Blistering forth, a barbaric and mesmerising incantation of swirling Heavy Metal instrumental violence and creepy vocals display the full force of Brazil’s musical history, burning the Extreme Metal flame as strong as it did back in the 80s and 90s with this total worship of the cult bands that put their flag in the skulls of the weak decades ago. Pulverising drums continue to surge erratically between riffs the drift between the full-speed assaults to almost doomy territory. The diversity in sound is gloriously tied together and feels like a very natural progression rather than random ideas thrown together any which way. Speedkiller are clearly passionate maniacs who know their craft well and conjure blasphemous music naturally without trying too hard, nor being lazy and sticking to one bland sound. Storms of bass back up the razor-sharp guitars to give a skull-pounding sound while still remaining raw as the chaos of the drummer blitzes on. In under half an hour, you will be left smouldering by this Metal magic from real extremist savages.
This is a really killer debut album. Lots of ideas from various Black / Death / Thrash Metal influences moulded together to give a marvellous example of the strength of Brazil’s Extreme Metal underworld. Perhaps not the most original style, but who cares when it harkens back to some of the best bands ever known and honours them so excellently? I certainly do not. This is barbaric, unholy, thrashing violence that we all need. -8/10
