Norwegian Black-Thrash savages EVOKE are here with their debut album of morbid defiance. Out now via Pulverised Records.
Thundering bass, crashing cymbals and blistering riffs pummel forth a tempest of thrashing Extreme Metal madness, kicking right into a devilish onslaught of pure insanity. The vocals are totally barbaric and suit the mystical ferocity gloriously as the pounding carnage continues to rip through a phenomenally dark and macabre assault. The Speed Metal fury in the guitars blends rhythmic excellence with stunningly soulful solos to top a crushing drum performance and entwine with the barbarian hell-noise of the vocalist. This is another fine example of Norway nailing Black-Thrash, for further proof see Deathhammer, Condor and Aura Noir. Right off the bat, Evoke’s debut album seems set to be a killer one.
Monstrous instrumentals continue to decimate all in their path without remorse. This is the kind of music to blast while headbanging or not at all, so crank it up to 11. Seeds Of Death plants rotten roots in your skull as the band erupt into a black speed inferno of pure masterful Metal magic. Taking the anthemic nature of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, the tormenting speeds of the Thrash and Speed movement and then adding the fury of Black Metal, we hear some truly extreme insanity from these Norwegian newcomers. Vitriolic and boundless energy presents these morbid concoctions of devilish demolition with respectable primality and no room for posers to listen to these blasphemous tracks.
The album flies by in a blur of rampaging Sarcofago-reminiscent debauchery. This is unfaltering and proud of it with so much tight musicianship and truly impeccable feel to the music itself. Nothing is present that feels overproduced or indulgent, nor does it feel any more showy than necessary. This is a bestial onslaught of total chaos and violence, not for the faint of heart. Evoke do what they need to do damn well without any regard for the bells and whistles that could be added in the name of progression, preferring to take the old school and primitive root of delivering utterly feral thrashing lunacy. Do not just take my word for it, behold this beastly slab of fury for yourself.
A scolding and magnificent debut from demonic Black-Thrash Metal master-crafters Evoke. This is an unforgiving and unapologetic record that will either drag you into its tornado of furious Heavy Metal or leave your carcass thrown out to the wolves. Get involved, get headbanging and get ready for Evoke to dominate. -8.5/10
