Polish Black Metal congregation BATUSHKA is back with a new EP of orthodox eeriness. Out now via Witching Hour Productions. Band history aside, this review is objective. I adored the debut album and was disappointed by both variations full lengths since. Is this the return to form we have waited for?
Tranquil guitars and chimes set things out to a hopeful start with a melancholic ambience before chants ensue with a cascade of gorgeously bitter riffs. The ballistic drum work and ferocious guitars definitely do not lack bite nor atmosphere. As we saw from the bands inception, the mix is very bass heavy with a stunning layering of chants and riffs to intersperse furious screams. From very early on, it seems we have finally got a worthwhile new Batushka record. Rhythmically monstrous and packing a hell of a punch with storms of excellent musicianship while rekindling the orthodox elements of “Litourgiya”, this is exactly what I was hoping for. My apprehension is totally quelled as the violent, earth-shaking groove and melancholic scorn of the EP develop further through haunting passages with the unnerving religious overtones once more being utilised properly.
As we venture on, the spectacle of the music evolves splendidly with rich tones and a demonically eerie performance that is as punishing as it is awe-inspiring. Erupting into storms of pure magnificence, the passion and drive that we saw on “Litourgiya” is back without question. This is a masterful return to form that does not just live up to exception but surpasses them with a rejuvenated energy, groove and sense of fire in the heart of the music. I am thoroughly impressed by the growth shown here and feel like we have “un-lost” a truly valuable Black Metal band and their haunting sound that is unique to say the least. The whole EP has this feeling of rebirth that is chilling throughout and makes the daunting music even more spectacular to behold. There is once again a sense of nuance and another realm of existence seeping forth from the name Batushka.
While perhaps “Litourgiya” will never be lived up to, this is by far the best release under any Batushka moniker since. A magnificent EP that has pure energy conjured in Orthodox Black Metal form with a fantastic instrumental and chant balance. Chaos and melody meet and we are once more delivered something of note that is hugely enjoyable. I will be the first to admit that I was nearly put off by the previous events, but moving on and giving this a chance was certainly worthwhile, so do not be clouded or foolish as I was into thinking this wouldn’t be worthwhile. Batushka is back at last and on top form. -8/10
