ALBUM REVIEW: Malicious – Deranged Hexes

Sepulchral Death Metallers MALICIOUS are back with their debut full length album to follow a demo and EP, each garnering positive responses in the underground. Set for release via Invictus Productions on October 30th.

A ripping onslaught of bestial riffing, hammering drums and snarled vocals quickly erupt with volatile soundscapes, conveyed by a visceral delivery of total carnage. The mayhem is raw yet clear-cut, delving through charnel layers of high-octane and extremely dark Blackened Death Metal excellence. It is clear this debut full length is going to leave a mark of morbid and otherworldly conjurations, concocted into a malignant firestorm of utterly devastating Extreme Metal. It is clear from early on fans of bands such as Degial, Necrovore and Concrete Winds will find a similarly tasteful energy in this unhinged slab of blasphemous Death Metal desecration. Despite the similarities mentioned, Malicious cannot be accused of being a repetition of any of these bands, their approach is unique, almost falling into War Metal territories through the album in its immense thrashing glory.

Crushing, distorting and warping soundscapes cause upsetting vision, summoned from a chaotic abyss in an irrefutably harsh manner, forcing their way into your mind with no remorse. Thundering bass cuts through the mix for a far more gut-wrenching sound than many of the contemporaries in this style. Visceral riffs and blasting drums naturally rain down unholy hailing aggression while the vocals have such a vitriolic delivery that they do not simply fall into the greater array of violence. In less than half an hour, we see demonic visions spring to life in a hellishly barbaric delivery of necrotising Death Metal that does not hold back an ounce of malice. Primal, ferocious and utterly magnificent, the unfurling wings of psychotically charged morbidity will leave no crypt unopened.

A dense, claustrophobic and obliterating slice of Sepulchral Death Metal brilliance the shines a light on lost realms of decay. This is not a release to take lightly, its blasphemous noise and venomous delivery will haunt the brave and destroy the weak. A phenomenal debut. -8/10
