American Black Metal occultists OMINOUS RESURRECTION are back with their second album of ghastly and orthodox vibrations. Set for release via Terratur Possessions on August 28th.
Chiming bells and estranged ambience starts the release off in a unique and non-traditional manner, going for a more experimental angle to unsettle us from the get-go. Hypnotising in a fashion that seems genuinely surreal, this beginning passage is anything but relaxing in its monotonous, unhinged glory. Untamed riffs and scathing drums ferocious scold us without warning, opting for a restless and bestial display of macabre and ancient energies, focused through the medium of violent Black Metal chaos with incantation-styled vocals howled through the blistering, unforgiving instrumentals. The raw and claustrophobic nature of the music may be too stern for some, but the ambience is certainly rewarding in an oppressively atmospheric and avant-garde sort of way.
With such a hazy and yet equally cutting sound from the thunderous roaring bass, chainsaw-riffing spew of the guitars to the pummelled, ritualistic drum fills, there is no doubt that the instrumental section of the band is perfectly demonic, served suitably with a visceral performance vocally that matches the savagery to perfection. Tense and foreboding throughout, this style of Black Metal is operatic more than it is aggressive, though in way that rips through you without mercy. Uncertain and wavering in its wake, those who dare venture into this soundscape may find it quite inescapable due to the punishing intensity and voluptuous melodies, fuelled by pure disdain.
The seething vitriol that can be felt in this music does not waver, though it transcends from mesmerising chants, dissonant explosions, convulsive grooves and all-out armageddon. Waltzing into the abyss, one cannot say the anguish felt due to these soundscapes is anything but a psychedelic experience of total cerebral annihilation from a presence beyond our comprehension. Experimental in the most disturbing fashion, things continue to warp into stranger and more dangerously violent territories as things are pushed out into the expansive realms of sound while retaining the Black Metal assault at the heart of everything.
A crushing opus of truly dexterous and destructive Black Metal, offered as a tempest of unforgiving and oppressive soundscapes that must certainly be approached with caution. Do not go near this release with a closed mind as it is for a select few who will utterly adore this resplendent piece of undeniably original and killer sonic extremism. -8.5/10
