EP REVIEW: Unurnment – Self-Immolation Suite

Old school Technical Death Metallers UNURNMENT are back with their 2nd EP of brutal yet expansive extremity. Out via Maggot Stomp Records on September 4th.

Abrasive sampling starts off our short journey into rotten realms before brilliantly tight hammering drums file into place before a barbaric onslaught of blasts sets in. Convulsive riffs in the vein of Suffocation pummel forth a rotten cascade of malice, setting the guttural vocals up beautifully to rain down a spew of odious offal upon the instrumentals. With some really mind-bending, cerebral musicianship akin to that of Gorguts, Demilich and more recently bands like Blood Incantation, the technical side of the music is utilised in a far more brilliant fashion than just obnoxious sweep picking over generic breakdowns, this is the real deal. It is clear we have something of substance and genuine fortitude on our hands with Unurnment.

I must admit the term technical before Death Metal can often put me off, due to the mentioned stylistic dwindling, however when done correctly as we have seen from the bands I mentioned earlier and some more out-there ones like Portal, there is a recipe for greatness to be unlocked. Meandering forth with a hugely diverse and spectacular array of sounds, interwoven in the most filthy manner, Unurnment hold their convictions of playing brutal Death Metal that has both technicality and old school savagery by the landslide, which is the only fitting way to term an unending stream of monolithic riffs being hurled your way. A truly fierce follow up, stronger than the first which was still solid, but really hammering the nail in here.

From sewer-dwelling rhythmic shifts to cosmos-opening shreds and everything in between, the ruthless technical battery and brutal malignancy to be found on this EP will certainly turn heads from all corners of the Death Metal underground. Do not be a fool and less this obscure gem of pustulant secretions pass you by. -8/10
