ALBUM REVIEW: Havukruunu – Uinuos Syömein Sota

Finnish Folk-Black Metallers HAVUKRUUNU are back with their third album, set for release via Naturmacht Productions on August 14th.

Ambient chanting sets off the album with a gorgeously ancient sense of folky resplendence, harkening back to times of old with traditional Finnish folksong. Visceral riffs soar in with huge atmospherics, blasting drums and emotive howls. The vibrance of true Finnish Black Metal aggression with riveting melancholy is certainly present as the melodically charged assault grows into utterly monstrous and stunning territories. Such a varied and impactful sound that is so wonderfully haunting has become something Havukruunu have delivered consistently and clearly they have not faltered for this new record, that can be said very early on.

Technical proficiency and Black Metal have often not gone hand in hand but we see some blistering lead work and impressive riffs, drum fills and generally tight musicianship here. This is not utilised in an obnoxious fashion, rather allowing their folky extremity to be delivered with utmost sonic diversity and impeccably jaw-dropping skill. The transitions between instrumentation but also from harsh to clean vocals is all fantastically put together with smooth transcendence that conveys a cascade of folky, Black Metal brilliance with seamless progression. There is never a jarring or weak section to throw things out, always charging forth with precision.

Havukruunu have steadily gained a loyal following in recent years, it is abundantly clear why with this uniquely enticing opus of Finnish glory. While their first two records were both exquisite, this third slab of mysticism is even better with a marvellous array of killer riffs, entrancing leads, varied drum work and spectral vocals. All of this is tied together with some subtle synth work, sampling or chanting, always carefully placed to give the record a very natural feel. From devastating blasting rampages to hypnotising folksong to rocky grooves, this album has such an impeccably varied palette that is utilised to full effectiveness magnificently.

Havukruunu have delivered their third and best slice of Finnish Black Metal heathenism to date. Packed with monstrous extremity and gorgeous folklore in perfect harmony and delivered with astounding musicianship, lovers of Atmospheric / Folky Black Metal that retains the savagery of the genre will assuredly adore this new release. -8.5/10
