ALBUM REVIEW: Uada – Djinn

US Black Metal mystics UADA are back with their third album. Set for release via Eisenwald on September 25th.

Melodic riffs and upbeat drums pound in with a rather upbeat and catchy nature to them, certainly an unorthodox beginning for a Black Metal record. Entrancing melodies and intricate fills emanate forth with precision before a cascade of blastbeats and visceral riffs chime into a molten array of haunting and spectral soundscapes. The progressive nature of the music comes very naturally, as do the snarled vocals that tie together the frenetic instrumental work. There is a rather ritualistic rhythm to sections of this music that suits the incantation styled vocals, adding a strong spiritual element to the diverse, warping extremity that Uada has to offer.

This album is packed with not only stunning and grandiose melodies but also crushing grooves that counter the melodies in such a fantastically bold and memorable manner that one cannot help be intoxicated by the musical prowess shown by the full band. Such gorgeous melancholy and visceral aggression meet naturally in this emotive and yet vanquishing performance of pure intense and cathartic Black Metal. The essence of their previous works is strongly present yet has been refined on this release to a much more expansive yet transcendental ambience, pushing their own boundaries while never becoming overzealous with the ideas utilised.

Devastating and brilliant, each song on this album is a monolithic affair in its own right. As a greater piece of art, they truly glow in a radiant aura of mystique and occultist realms. The fluidity of this music is mind-blowing. With ease we are drawn through ghostly atmospherics, almost technical progressions and then cerebral psychedelia. Thorough and with a monstrous production, their is nothing left to falter with a massive and all-consuming final result on this tome of demonic and yet tranquil sounds. Rich and unforgettable, the opulent ritualistic Black Metal only grows throughout the haunting listening time, a full hour of wonderful musicianship.

Third time is the charm. Uada have not only returned on top form but have created their most ambitious and brilliant masterpiece to date. Pushing forth, improving musically and with a far more exquisite and yet daunting approach, this third record is by far their best and a real gem of the American Black Metal scene. -8/10
