Following a demo earlier this year, visceral Death Metal barbarians WRITHING SHADOWS are back with an EP, set for release via Gurgling Gore Records on August 21st.
Doomy riffs draw in with crashing cymbals, taking us back to the glory days of Bolt Thrower, Asphyx and Benediction with a built up charge of pounding and fierce Death Metal. The utterly savage musicianship is delivered in a raw production in which sadly the guitar sit a bit too quietly but still break through enough over the pummelled drums to showcase that catchy hooks that the riffing has to offer. A slew of vicious vocals accompanies the wonderfully stampeding instrumentals, taking on the forceful approach of a grindcore band however with the hooks and meatiness that roots it in the rotten Death Metal genre.
This is primitive, so prepare for raw, cataclysmic blasts and cerebral riffing alongside maniacal grunts. I was impressed the dynamic use of expansive psychedelia amidst the flow of gut-busting Death Metal. Writhing Shadows can certainly conjure up a unique take on extremity while giving us that deliciously slimy familiarity that we all know and love. For me, the production could be a little tighter, mainly bringing up the guitars which would make for a huge improvement to the delivery. This said, the ideas of the band are really good and I think with development could become something pretty unique and memorable. All in all, a pretty damn good EP that has rather big potential based on what I have heard here. -7/10
