ALBUM REVIEW: Frostvore – Drowned By Blood

Japanese old school Death Metallers FROSTVORE are here with their debut album of blood-drenched carnage. Set for release via Testimony Records on August 28th.

Creepy riffs set in an ambient, doomy and spectral soundscape that permeates the air with a dense, foggy sense of mystery. Slow guitars crawl into the mix slowly with a soaring tone that breaks up the cleaner notes gorgeously. Ferocious drums thrash in with macabre riffs cascading onto them, the masterfully brutal assault meeting with snarled vocals to conjure a monolith of morbid Death Metal excellence. Clearly these Japanese maniacs draw influence from the Swedish Death Metal style (especially in the HM-2 fuelled guitars) while certainly stamping it with their own savage brand of extremity. There is no mistaking the fact this is going to be some meaty material of the most vicious fashion.

Aside from the grisly rhythmic battery we get some shredding lead work that works well in the framework of blunderingly heavy and monstrously intense Death Metal. Pungent riffs continue to groove and erupt into onslaughts of total mayhem while always packing a tight and refined punch with a variety of blastbeats and d-beats to punctuate the slew of violence. The raspiness of the vocals adds a feeling akin to LG Petrov which certainly doesn’t feel amiss in this crushing juggernaut of total annihilation. Slower sections bring back the doomy texture from the very start of the album every so often to give a real headbanger-fuelling monolith of grooves.

Captivating hooks spew forth with an odiously visceral launch through passages of eerie and devastatingly brutal material. The diverse tempo changes keep things fresh while the transference between blasts, grooves and drawn out creepiness feels naturally progressed rather than a forced result of unrefined ideas. Smashing onwards, each piece of music contributes to a greater picture of morbidly exciting and obliterating Death Metal brilliance which never ceases in its unrelenting flow of killer ideas, morphine to concoct a dastardly, precise and tormentingly heavy listen from start to end.

This is an absolute ripper from Frostvore, debuting with some ultimately crushing, buzzsaw-dragging Death Metal packed with mighty hooks, infectious grooves, charnel atmospherics and rampant blasts. Lovers of all things old school, grotesque and brutal will certainly be captured by the raw, filthy and passionate charm of this blood-curdling record. -8/10
