EP REVIEW: Dwaellicht – Te Vuur En Te Zwaard

Following a single demo, Belgian Funeral Doom / Death Metallers DWAELLICHT have their debut EP to unleash. Out now via Cavernous Records and Back From The Grave Tapes.

Drums pound in before stunningly mournful riffs channel a bleak and emotive energy. Grisly vocals come through the ethereal instrumentals to make for a haunting display of depressive and deathly Doom Metal coated in a morbid and eerie darkness. Spectral and dismally sorrowful, Dwaellicht have a viciously heavy, dragging sound that really gets under your skin and moreover, into your subconscious. This is definitely a chilling EP that will leave even the hardened Extreme Metal fans shaken, at least on an emotional level.

There is a simplicity to the music that is melodic and memorable while the primal sounds conjure a hypnotic effect upon the listener. These tracks convey the feeling of a rainy day in a brutal and yet beautiful manner. The raw yet huge mix is clear yet not overly polished, adding more to the murky depravity of the songs. There is a guttural aggression in the Death Metal parts that couples with the gorgeously drawn out Doom Metal in a really enticing way. Making a profoundly depressing yet intensely heavy record is not an easy feat, but here it is certainly achieved.

Lovers of Funeral Doom with some bite will adore this record. It is crushing in every sense of the word. While short, the drawn out and haunting pieces expand in a natural and fantastic manner that will certainly mesmerise those who listen. Do not miss out on this mystical slab of deathly Doom Metal. -8/10
