Australian Blackened Death Metal pirates are back their first album in six years. Promising debauchery and carnage, stormy seas lie ahead. Out via 20 Buck Spin on May 22nd.
Doomy guitars draw in the eerie morbidity with rolling waves of cymbals and pummelling drum hits, accentuating the gruesome riffs. Thrashing into chaos before returning to more doomy territories, it is clear that this album is going to offer a huge diversity of sounds, each as gripping as the last. Ferociously bombarding Extreme Metal continues to devastate and soon we are joined by the maniacal vocals to delve further into grim territories. Barbaric and magnificently old school sounding, this record is certainly a monolithic return to form for these Australian savages.
Monstrous and visceral passages continue into a mythical and fantastical realm, delivering the hordes of Heavy Metal into a frenzied assault, blasting forth with total chaos. There is also precision and tightness to the music which allows the spearhead of their music to be effective at hitting hard and with utmost aggression. Hammered drums and caustic rhythms guitars are met with melodic soloing that occasionally adds something rather beautiful to the marvellously evil sounds of the band, gloriously soaring through the meaty mix.
Hideously twisted pieces of Blackened Death Metal are continually conjured with profoundly brilliant songwriting that is packed with atmosphere and wonderfully unique ideas that are tormentingly primal yet intricate. Breaking boundaries and concocting a mystically dark and hellish sound with the themes to match, Cauldron Black Ram plunder forth with a demonic onslaught of pure Heavy Metal might. Each song is a memorable and slightly odd affair, each tied together by this overwhelming urge to plow on, working to the bands favour in creating a monolith of ferocity and crushingly brutal music.
This album is weird, it certainly has the oddness to warrant many repeat listens, in fact they may well be necessary to appreciate all the nuance and finery that has gone into it. With that said, the fabric of the music is barbaric and furious, thus it is easy to quickly be won over by the charm of these Black-Death pirates and sink your teeth into a brilliant new record from them. Cavernous, focal and harsh, “Slaver” is certainly an interesting and killer record that shows Extreme Metal is not only alive and kicking in Australia (one of the finest scenes on the planet), but is still innovative and experimenting to keep the sound fresh. -8/10
