ALBUM REVIEW: Tyrant – Hereafter

American Heavy Metal legends TYRANT finally have their comeback record, the first since ’96 to be specific. This album will hopefully continue their stubborn vein of Heavy Metal. Out via Shadow Kingdom Records on May 15th.

Battle-hardened ambient soundscapes start us off with spoken word, building drum fills and striking chords with whammy dives. Tyrant are back with full force. Ripping riffs speedily drive forth a pure form of classic Heavy Metal excellence as the band dive into a galloping onslaught of melodically charged instrumentals and immense vocals. Gloriously powerful and rhythmically unstoppable, this is going to be a stellar slab of classic and mighty Metal. From very early on it is evident that this will be a fierce record to ignite the flame of nostalgia but also rekindle an older flame, who better than a band from the actual era to do so?

There is a charm to the primal groove and Maiden-esque gallops of the music that just feels right, like a portal back into the early 80s. Catchy choruses and tremendously built songs create an aura of relentlessly brilliant Heavy Metal. With a thundering bass performance throughout met by hammering drum work and ferociously killer guitars both on the rhythm and lead side (though performed by one guitarist), this is exactly what is needed to backline the monolith of singing provided by the vocalist, Tyrant as a band is truly a tight unit with amazing ideas.

From start to end we are taken on a glorious journey into battle with viciously memorable riffs soaring through a solid foundation of drums and bass along with the vocals which are suitably haunting. Groovy, exciting and superbly performed, it is difficult to tell that this is 2020 from listening, feeling as though the 80s have come back like a spectre from an era so often adored by fans of Metal. The undeniably wonderful Tyrant have not just delivered the first album in 24 years, they have conjured a magnificent beast of pure Heavy Metal as if they never left.

Tyrant have not released a flimsy comeback to cash in on a renewed love for classic Heavy Metal, they have regrouped to dominate with a furious banger of an album that deserves total respect. I do not think it needs to be stated that all lovers of classic Heavy Metal must not miss out on this record, however it is important to say anybody who wishes to seek out more obscure classic bands will certainly love the new work of Tyrant whom have returned as strong as ever. -8/10
