ALBUM REVIEW: Funeralopolis – …Of Deceit And Utter Madness

FUNERALOPOLIS have unveiled their debut full length album of old school Death Metal destruction, set for release via Memento Mori Records on April 27th.

Creepy carnival sounds and distorted screams set the terrifying vibe for whatever lies ahead in an utterly harrowing fashion. Grisly crawling riffs and mid tempo drums with killer cymbal work draws in the brilliance of mighty old school Death Metal ferociously as the grooves creep into charnel layers of macabre extremity. Viscerally brooding with contempt and with atmospheric doomy elements, there is plenty of ambience to this record but also relentless sections of fast-paced action and d-beat hooks to keep a well-balanced, headbanger friendly stream of morbid delights that is diverse, volatile and exciting.

Throughout the album there is an imminent sense of dread from the horrors these crushing Death Metallers conjure up with an astounding array of pure malevolence. With touches of dissonance adding to the unsettling sound of the album, it is no wonder amidst the slaughtering barbarism of the tracks there is something further beneath the obvious rupturing grooves, blastbeats and meaty hooks that furthers the disturbing side of the assault. Gorgeously blended with a tight production that hits hard and fast while drawing out the necessary slower parts the fuel the growing anticipation for something abysmally dark and chaotic, this has definitely got some intricate and profoundly forceful songwriting behind it.

Mutating, evolving and staying fresh from start to end, there is not a dull or predictable moment in this savage monstrosity of an album that retains that first spin feel wherein plenty of nuances are buried in the crypt of the bands sound, to be discovered upon repeat listens. Thunderously visceral and putrid, the channeled energy of the whole band is powerfully obliterating with an unrelentingly hammering drum performance backing up waves of guttural riffs and howled, growling vocals. Pure, untamed malice and destruction in an excellently eerie, grotesque package of Death Metal brilliance that will definitely gain the respect and acknowledgement it deserves and remain blasting from the sound systems of those who grab it as the mysterious horror are further unraveled.

Truly magnificent, a release that leaves a gruesomely bold impression that reverberates through you with its malignantly destructive extremity, grinding out superb bangers throughout with plenty of diversity, musical strength and totally fantastic songwriting. Do not miss out on this putrid tome of twisted, convulsing Death Metal. -8.5/10
