EP REVIEW: Wynter Myst – End Of An Era

Mr Blackwood is back with a new project of ravenous Black Metal, this time the debut EP from WYNTER MYST. Out now on Bandcamp with physical releases coming soon via Legions Ov Darkness, Cavernous Records and Blackwood Productions.

Jumping right in with blastbeats and ice cold riffs, accompanied by howling vocals, the Finnish Black Metal vibes start off strong with a melancholic yet fierce blizzard of icy brilliance. The riffs are tight, primal and emotive with killer drums backing up the extremity to make the perfect instrumental onslaught to match the filthily screamed vocals. Raw production is expected on this type of release and suitably captures that 90’s Nordic atmosphere with some piercing guitar work breaking through as it did back them so profoundly and memorably. With the musician in question being known from the likes of Arcane North, Old Corpse Road and more recently Peasant, I knew the songwriting would be devastatingly grim and this does not disappoint. Some nasty Carpathian Forest style grooves are also utilised from maximum headbanger compatibility, fitting gorgeously into the tempest of ravaging riffs and blastbeats amidst some depressive atmospherics, further adding to the bleak ambience of the EP. This may not be the most original material but it is viciously excellent and captures the old school Black Metal flame with utmost skill and intoxicating atmosphere. Anguish, despair and melancholy gorgeously meet vitriolic hatred and grisly aggression for a well contrasted listen. All fans of old school Finnish, Swedish and French Black Metal will definitely enjoy this ripping display of melancholic despair. -8.5/10
