It’s been a little while since I reviewed some Doom Metal, so I am looking forward to checking out the debut full length from GODTHRYMM following two EP’s. Out now via Profound Lore Records.
Depressive clean guitars set a melancholic pace for the introduction which is totally haunting and gorgeously played. Crisp doomy riffs and thundering drums soon drive out a monolith of morbidly executed grooves and epic soaring leads, adding a melodic yet crushing dynamic to the soundscape. Fuzzy walls of devastatingly heavy riffs back up chilling howled vocals. This material certainly has that epic classic Doom Metal vibrancy that is delivered with total strength as the tracks glide through chilling, dark passages of pure excellency with this ferociously stomping drum performance beneath the guitars which give a fantastic display of majestic riffs, remaining consistently punchy throughout the album for perfectly doomy instrumental work. Female vocals add to the despairing melancholy, working beautifully with the melodic guitars and thundering groove. This album lurks through endlessly progressing morbid Doom Metal with a stunning display of how to keep that classic feeling alive while doing something memorable too. Hypnotically entrancing, there is definitely something special about this album that will appeal to most Doom Metal fans on the planet with its crunchy storm of pure magnificence, the old school way. The melodics amidst the pure rhythmic battery give the contrast which for me is why bands such as Candlemass are so brilliant, something that has been used beautifully on this record. Also reminiscent of bands like My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost and in some parts even Electric Wizard, this truly is the complete Doom Metal package. The monstrously heavy walls of riffs and pummelled drums grinding out bleak yet powerful Doom Metal alongside the vocalists ultimate passion for raspy yet harmonious chanting. This is some stoic music that will have you ensnared by its excellency from start to end as it churns out pure macabre and sombre brilliance with staunch riffs and exciting progressions. -8/10
