EP REVIEW: Filthgrave – Necromantic Rituals

Following their 2017 debut demo, FILTHGRAVE have an EP of Norwegian Blackened Death Metal destruction from the belly of the underground in Oslo. Out now via Snake Oil Kassettforlag.

Driving out grisly riffs, blastbeats and hellish howls, no time is wasted in delving into a thrashing onslaught of Blackened Death Metal decimation. The groove of the riffs is a fast-paced adrenaline rush over hammering drums with some tight lead melodies coming through in the solos. The vocalist keeps up with the assault with some maniacally evil vocals that are reminiscent of classic-era Deicide. This morbid EP is energetic and destructive, while it may be nothing we haven’t heard before there is no denying the ferocity and primal energies to be found here and is definitely worth a listen for fans of Black Metal and Death Metal alike. “Screams From The Bottomless Pits” was by far the best track for me which offers plentiful drum battery, some slightly more discordant and interesting guitar riffs and intensely violating vocals, overall a track that was by far the most memorable, while the others were still really cool, this track shows the true potential of Filthgrave. There is definitely a diverse range of ideas on this EP too which certainly adds to its respectability and keeps things volatile and exciting. All in all this was a solid EP and a band to definitely keep an ear poised for. -7/10
