ANGEL WITCH are back with a new album, one of the most important bands in the genre of Heavy Metal, so this is definitely one to get! Out now via Metal Blade Records.
“Don’t Turn Your Back” brings the album in with full strength melodic guitars, pounding drums and anthemic vocals. They waste no time in driving out a catchy and brilliant cascade of speeding Heavy Metal glory that should appeal to all. Everything from the crisp guitars, powerful vocals, snappy drum fills and warm cleanliness of the bass lines screams of the 70s and 80s Heavy Metal that is still finding its way into the modern fans regular record spins is present here for a magnificent deliverance of what was, is and forever will be true British Metal. Forever upbeat and energetic, these old timers show that no amount of drop tuning or blastbeats necessarily mean heaviness, this is a sound we should all revel in the remaining existence and bite of which hits as hard as any Black, Death, or Thrash Metal with precision and catchiness alike. Gorgeously written melodies break up the meaty rhythms and transcendental bridges tie this record together with all instruments in perfect harmony with each other and backing up a stellar vocal performance beautifully. Of course we are given a ballad such as “The Night Is Calling” which is powerful and does not feel like lame filler material but instead grows into furiously anthemic and monstrously tense, brooding brilliance. Overall this album is far more in the direction of fast, unrelenting and awesome Heavy Metal while touching on some doomy elements in the vein of Saint Vitus and such, certainly adding to the occasionally macabre undertones of this otherwise vibrant and eclectic record. While their self titled record still remains one of my favourite NWOBHM albums of all time, this release shows the band have definitely not lost their touch at creating fantastically fun, catchy and utterly killer songs and have definitely grown as musicians throughout the years. I should not need to tell anyone to check out a new Angel Witch release, but in case I do, quit reading my blog and crank it right now! -8/10
