ALBUM REVIEW: Orthodoxy – Novus Lux Dominus

The highly anticipated debut full length album from ORTHODOXY is here. Destined to bring an estranged, inhuman and otherworldly Death Metal experience, set for release on October 31st via The Sinister Flame.

Starting off we are drawn in with beautifully tranquil soundscapes of ambient guitars that glisten and fade in with a feeling of foreboding clearly present. Putrid Death Metal grinds in without warning, throwing us into grisly riffs and thunderous drum hits that spew a dreadfully crushing take on spectral extremity to a decimating new level, especially when met with the hauntingly demonic snarls of the vocals. The band utilise an odious blend of Doom Metal amidst this assault to vomit huge walls of densely layered soundscapes, adding atmosphere and some chilling leads to the mix. While the slower sections certainly make the music more ambient, they do not detract from the obliterating death-march of the blastbeats and swampy riffs that belch out some of nastiest Death Metal that is as dissonant as it is pulverising. Impressive drum fills punch through the mix to add this bludgeoning aggression to the grimy guitar work and shredded leads, these guys sure know how to make a damn intense experience with totally excellent songwriting and a filthy production to match. A sludgy cacophony of maniacally heavy slow sections contrasted with some brutally fast-paced thrashing assaults makes for a well-blended inferno of Death Metal so repugnantly unforgettable that this release should certainly not be ignored. It is impressive how many phenomenally gruesome blows the band deliver in an unpredictable array of doomy Death Metal filled with guttural sludgy depravity and full-speed extremity in perfect harmony. This is some filthily gorgeous material that was mesmerising from start to end while keeping each transcendence in sound smooth and exciting, never over-playing one idea for an almost ever-evolving record. If bands like Abyssal and Blood Incantation are your thing, then you need to hear this album! Astonishingly despairing, dissonant Death Metal brilliance. For me, those closing song was the strongest offering the ultimatum in all all that led to this horrendously heavy precipice and indulging in a marvellous spectacle of diverse Death Metal excellency. Enter this abyss of crawling, meaty riffs. -8/10
