ALBUM REVIEW: Venereal Baptism – Repugnant Coronation Of The Beast

The brand new desecrating album from VENEREAL BAPTISM is coming out on September 27th via Osmose Productions. Time for some totally depraved Black Metal that shall leave no weakling alive.

Opening with some glorious sampling before the bestial hellfire of Black Metal tremolo riffs, blastbeats and grimy vocals completely assaults you without warning, there is certainly an unfaltering strength to the release that is abundantly clear from the get-go. Among the swirling inferno of cavernously hideous warfare there is plentiful whammy bar solos and a grinding energy that hits hard with utmost ferocity. With more primitive songwriting akin to Punk in parts, this is hellishly evil music that is certainly not designed for the weak, leaving a path of devastation in its wake. Torn from the sewers, the guttural sound of bellowing vocals, rhythmically pounding drums and gut-wrenching guitar work creates a disgusting concoction that conjures only morbidity and hatred with its fiercely aggressive death-march, while lacking a sense of variety, the headstrong onslaught of devastating blows is unmistakably awesome and certainly requires a level of primitive simplicity to execute this style properly, thus the lack of musical diversity is certainly not a weakness here. Occasionally we are thrown some maniacal shreds to add even more sonic intensity to the blackened soundscape of crusty ugliness while not detracting from the overall stench of ripping blasts and menacing blitzkrieg musicianship. There is also some of the most wickedly disturbing sample use on the 5th track that perfectly suits the music, so kudos for that gnarly opening that leads into totally extremist anarchy. Throughout the record we are given a savage serving of classically pounding riffs, blasts and snarls that are reminiscent of something between IMPALED NAZARENE and BLACK WITCHERY but also touching on the likes of BONEHUNTER, certainly a phenomenal combination that is delivered with a fantastically filthy bravado, offering totally monolithic walls of unholy noise and violent prowess. A truly blasphemous record that is unsettlingly vitriolic, barbaric and offers no respite, this is one for all the lovers of truly insane extremity, giving little use of melody and taking a much more butchering approach of stripped-back, high-velocity, intimidatingly loud Black Metal. For this type of style it is very common to have far shorter tracks but VENEREAL BAPTISM do not conform, with the average length being over 4 minutes. This could lead to the sound becoming tiresome but the hideously forceful energy of the band coupled with an exciting excellency and limitless repertoire of thrashing grooves keeps the music interesting and leaves you yearning for more. A deathly harrowing release with a sense of impending chaos that is present throughout, this obliterating slice of disdain is one you do not want to miss out on. Overall I found the tracks to flow consistently with no shortage of energy, while utilising very little variation, it all worked really well and had a brilliant sense of completion that I cannot hold against them, so if you prefer a much more primal sound, then this is definitely one to check out. -8/10
