Here I review the brand new album from American Crust Death Metal mob BONES! Out on September 20th via Transcending Obscurity Records. Now is the time for filth.
Driving right in with grisly guitar hooks, pounding drums and a ferocious sense of momentum. Dissonant guitars and screamed vocals blend together over the hammering drum attack to make for some unexpectedly avant-garde sounds within the crusty Death Metal assault. There are some gorgeously harsh blackened touches on the guitar riffs amidst the raw grinding assaults. With some subtle doomy textures adding a mournful melodic touch and emotive nature to the music, the tense abrasive attacks momentarily cease, regrow strength and unleash further. There is plentiful chugging grooves, barrages of insanely fast drums, gruesome vocal hooks and this filthy production that gives that buzzsaw edge to that ripping extremity. Thrashing out short tornadoes of hellishly intense Death Metal from start to end, Bones do a fantastic job of keeping things action-packed but without overdoing any element or overstaying their welcome, opting for a short but sweet slab of meaty riff savagery and old school morbidity. With this being their 3rd album, Bones are not newcomers, nor do they seem to be. There is a noticeable confidence in the violently pervasive music that only makes it all the more loveable. While I generally prefer Death Metal with HM-2’s or cavernous doomy atmospherics, there is no denying that this was a high-octane adrenaline rush of crusty grinding filth that is sure to satisfy fans of bands like Repugnant, Obituary or Superstition. There is a surprisingly ambitious amount of tempo changes which only made the release more unique and impressive alongside the sleazy snarls from the guitars and vocals over upbeat drum warfare, giving even more stunning variety to the short album. Marvellous work! -8/10
