Here I belatedly review in short the new record from Swedish Death Metal titans, FIRESPAWN with their new slab of riff-craft “Abominate”, out now via Century Media Records.
The album comes in with intimidating samples before a barrage of thunderous bass lines and pummelling drums hit us with full ferocity and then some intensely crawling guitars join the mix. Immediately this album hooks you with its meaty snarling instrumentals and damn impressive songwriting. LG Petrov’s signature hideous vomiting vocals soon tie everything together while the storming technicality of the instrumentals is coated with an odious layers of growls. The record has a gruesomely tight production that encapsulates the meaty riffing, unrelenting drums and hideously brutal vocals with such a gorgeously crushing onslaught of Death Metal remaining consistent throughout. After reviewing the much more old school MEMORIAM album, this shows that despite my love of all things classic, modern Death Metal isn’t always as monotone as it can be in many cases, FIRESPAWN launch a hellish soundscape of truly impeccable musicianship with originality and grace. Truly phenomenal rhythms, mind-bending shreds, tormenting bass lines, hammering drums and truly glorious vocals, this record has it all for those on the hunt for a crushing record filled with sheer skilfulness. There is little I can flaw about this material that delivers blow after blow of ferociously biting Death Metal onslaughts with no holds barred. This album showcases clearly the technicality and skilfulness doesn’t have to be used in a pretentious manner and can make for a crushing record. An exciting and captivating release of true brutality and savagery, this album totally slays. -8/10
