ALBUM REVIEW: Come Back From The Dead – The Rise Of The Blind Ones

Here I review the brand new album from Spanish Death Metallers COME BACK FROM THE DEAD, blending Swedish chainsaw brutality and American sludgy grooves on a brand new opus of savagery. Set for release via Transcending Obscurity Records on September 13th.

1. Outcast Of The Light opens with doomy rhythm guitars, slow crawling drums and chilling lead work that creates an immersive atmosphere from the onset with a morbid soundscapes concocted so odiously. Soon enough churning guitars and pounding drums drive us into blasting chaos for the ripping vocals to add their blend of chaotic frenzy to. A whiplash assault of tremolo picked grooves, gruesome snarls and blastbeats make for an impressively intimidating follow up to the Doom Metal style opening with a truly epic old school grinding Death Metal attack completed with a blistering solo. A glorious start to the album with some meaty and ferocious awesomeness that demands respect from the off and clearly shows what the band is about.
2. Martyr Of A Gruesome Demise grinds out more cavernous guitar riffs and intricate drum fills with more huge walls of doomy monoliths and searing leads building the conjurations of darkness further with grisly howling vocals completing things beautifully. In the fashion of the previous song the tempo is built up but this time into more catchy upbeat Death ‘n’ Roll style riffing that primitively barrages you with a raunchy take on Swedish Death Metal in the vein of Entombed’s “Wolverine Blues” mixed in with some decimating American influenced ferocity. The interwoven Death Metal and Doom Metal elements work together gorgeously especially with the harmonies in full swing. Another brilliant track.
3. Restless In Putrescence follows up with a full on storming assault taking place right away with primal guitars and waves of blastbeats, a menacingly grooving barrage of instrumentals provides the perfect backing to the maniacally growling vocalist for a nicely aggressive mix of thrashing Death Metal warfare that hits incredibly hard following the far more textured songs that came previously, this had a beautifully put together butchery akin to early Sodom and Kreator mixed with the bands crushing mix of Death Metal delights. Well-paced with some more doomy parts that provide the texture previously lacking and a stunning diversity, this song rips, hard. Some gorgeous lead guitar work is shown too. Fantastic.
4. Jugular I – Heretic Impaler opens with some damn tight bass work that is quickly joined by catchy guitar hooks and impactful vocals that hit with hardcore blows that blend some clearly Death-Doom influenced instrumentals but vocals that have quite the Grindcore feel to them which is an interesting and unique mix that works really well in this macabre crawls through densely extreme sounds to truly torment you with a newfound sense of aggression that acts as perfect fuel for moshers and headbangers alike with this stomping piece of simplistically effective Death Metal madness. Amazing.
5. Jugular II – The Altar Of Your Neck continues the two part monolith with more violent instrumental hooks, pummelling away with drums that are tormenting enough but mixed with the vitriolic vocal onslaught and grinding guitar savagery, this piece perfectly follows its predecessor with a snarling and blistering barrage of unsettling gruesomeness, dragged from the graves. Some excellent lead guitar work breaks up the barbarity but keeping things moving with the hideously heavy momentum remaining intact. Magnificent.
6. Nebulaes Of Malevolent Shining comes in with pounding drums followed by some absolutely amazing Doom Metal crawls, truly masterful riff work that conjures up morbid visions before the macabre and violent vocals scream putridity over the caverns of instruments. This track is ridiculously catchy with a really fun rhythm that is contagiously enjoyable, hitting hard with some of the tightest hooks and showing the band use simplistic songwriting to a very effective level that storms out totally epic and barbaric old school vibes that have an evil volatile streak, growing into monstrous tremolo crawls and eerily harsh Death Metal grinding attacks. This song is the perfect example of what the band can do in my opinion with a gorgeous blend of Death and Doom with some thrashing influences too. Totally immense and the tapping solo was perfectly suited to the frantic track.
7. Darkness Abominations falls into place with soaring guitar leads that draw in the meaty rhythm assaults beautifully for a storming and ferocious build up into truly unsettling brutality. The gorgeously gruesome vocals coat the fierce instrumental onslaught that thrashes out true devastation with an impeccable aggression and impressive precision, piercing you with daggers of total Death Metal massacre. Swinging grooves and a tight, old school style production, this hits hard, capturing the nuances and musical aesthetics of the originators of Death Metal with a modern twist from the band, this original sound coming from the clearly huge Thrash Metal influence on pieces like this. Great work.
8. Lick My Hands Wild Beasts continues in the thrashing pace of “Darkness Abominations” with intricately speedy riffs blasting out total fury before the grinding menace of blast beats, growls and tremolo picked gnarly riffs kick us back into the magnificently enticing and captivating horrors of the band, the unrelenting forcefulness of tracks like this is impressive and unmistakable with no respite in the punchy grooves and tormenting blasts, leaving you in awe after a totally violating experience of epic proportions from the maniacs. The frenzied solo completes the mixture of unnervingly harsh attacks perfectly. Damn good stuff.
9. Dead March storms in with a certainly marching groove followed by gorgeous and even tranquil doomy atmospherics that surprisingly lull you before driving out violent howls, keeping the song more on the melodic side however. A truly stunning and well-textured piece of old school morbidity filled with luxuriously occult soundscapes and some fierce guitar work. This piece is an interesting one as it does feature some punchy upbeat attacks but remaining in the more cavernously eerie vibe with a strong performance from the whole band. Utterly impeccable and catchy riffs on this one with well paced vocals and drums to punctuate them. Marvellous.
10. Possessed By The Death thrashes in with one last whirlpool of Death Metal fury, barraging blastbeats and whiplash guitars with nothing held back before the vocals break through, this song promises one final assault of true barbarity. The track picks up with some grinding assaults followed by a pounding and grooving masterpiece of truly cadaver shaking, stomping, old school beauty and melodic guitar leads. This altogether makes for a nicely balanced and meaty final track, blending a mixture of all the elements we have heard on the album up until now. I always like when a final track sort of ties everything together and the band do this insanely well. Certainly one of the best tracks on the album to showcase what they can do, plus the samples were an unexpected but excellent touch. Astounding.

This album is a true barbaric slab of Death Metal with a unique addition of Thrash and Doom Metal elements that keep you on your toes between that violent assaults and cavernous atmospheric grooves. The variety that this relatively short album has to offer is impressive and executed incredibly well. Some damn fierce work from the full band that balance everything brilliantly. -8.5/10
