Here I review the debut demo tape of ASTRIFEROUS which has been reissued on tape via Me Saco Un Ojo Records, some pure Death Metal filth from Costa Rica. This reissue is set for release on June 10th.
The album begins with nice Horror movie synths that set a dark atmosphere, perfect for Death Metal assaults to flow from. Thunderous guitar and bass growl into fruition with crashing cymbals, filled with a doomy and menacing feeling, a great way to break in the album. A roaring growl soon adds to the morbid droning death worship with soaring leads and intense rhythms backing it up. The speed soon changes into thrashing grooves with a monstrously heavy tone from all instruments, giving a cavernous barrage of pure, raw and grotesque old school Death Metal barbarity that is gorgeously filth-coated with a grim production style that accentuates the savage songwriting. Primally ferocious with a nice diversity in structure, there is some excellent use of the tried and tested formula. The demo is filled with a gnarly and unrelenting aggression that is present even in the slower sections that are tormenting and evil, morbid instrumental work and violent vocals fill out the atmospheric Death Metal brutality with such a dungeon-dwelling brand of odious grime that all classic Death Metal fans who enjoy instruments that sound rot-laden will certainly want to get their hands on this grimy tape. Another unmistakably putrid and brilliant release from Me Saco Un Ojo records! -8/10
