ALBUM REVIEW: Hyperdontia – Nexus Of Teeth

This review is of the new HYPERDONTIA full length, something that seems of have a cult of underground Death Metal fans squirming with excitement (quite probably due to including some very great and known musicians), and certainly caught my curiosity. It seems I have reviewed a few debut albums, this being one of them, recently. I like hearing new debut albums a lot as it is reflective of the here and now in Metal and gives insight to the future. Let’s see what these Turkish/Danish brutality purveyors have to offer, with the release on a label like Dark Descent Records, I am sure something wonderful will be coming.

1. Purging Through Flesh hits you right into things with some old school drum skills, a really nice flourish followed by nasty, furious riffs and guttural vocals. This seems from the off to be another piece of old school Death Metal, it also seems to be incredibly well written, dark and raw, but I guess time will tell. The riffs are really catchy with tons of groove, the drums are brutal and the vocals are positively demonic. The slower tempo section really makes things feel grim, a really excellent touch to accompany the simplistically soulful guitar solo. A very hopeful start, fingers crossed that the whole release is this good.
2. Of Spire And Thorn fluidly follows on from the first track very nicely, with more surging and groove laden riffs, precision packed drumming, and just an awesome classic feel to it. The production really fits the sound with its more raspy and cutting edge feel to it, excellent. The sense of rhythm is fantastic, giving the songs a really enticing feel to them so far. The slower sections are bleak and drudging with so much malice, but they seem to make only short appearances kicking into speed fuelled frenzy shortly afterwards. The snarl the vocalist produces is totally inhuman, love it! Gorgeous riffs, excellent lead work, thunderous bass, hellish vocals and insane drums, all the things one wants in Death Metal, right? This song is absolutely killer!
3. Teeth And Nails forces itself into existence with purely menacing riffs, discordancy  and just a really nasty, discomforting feel to it. This is some absolutely brutal stuff. The originality of the songs is certainly noticeable, I must say I am not immediately comparing these guys to many bands, which is great, they have added something new to the melting pot. The sludgy riffs combined with pummelled drums and extremely low vocals sounds so pungent, it’s awesome. The lead work is both simple and melodic really adding to the horrific atmosphere very nicely.
4. Aura Of Flies chugs away with utmost haste, the gut-churning grooves having never left us but feeling even more present from the very start of this piece. The tremolo picked riffs are very tastefully chosen and stitched together, while not changing much between track to track, this material certainly flows nicely and really belts the listener into musical oblivion. The bass tone is incredible and well placed in this mix as to really quicken the brutal blow of the sonic assault. There seems to be a really strong ability in the band to really mold things together perfectly. The guitar solo was a bit more flashy on this song with some whammy dives and a gorgeous tone, before that is kicking us back into hellish gutturals and invasively heavy Death Metal glory.
5. Majesty comes into existing with a nice little creepy sample and much more doomy, dragging riffs and pace this time around. The change in style really adds to the punch of the album, avoiding becoming repetitive. The vocals on this piece are ridiculously low, honestly some of the most brutally tormenting growls I have heard recently (similar somewhat although in a completely different genre to the vocals used in Eye Of Solitude). The fast paced, chaotic, tremolo picked, blast beating assault soon comes back with plentiful grooves once more. There is a kind of slammed feel to this song, but in the context of bands way before the time of slam. Pretty damn strong material though with some beautiful guitar soloing.
6. Euphoric Evisceration pretty much follows suit, doing so very nicely. The riffs are absolutely incredible as is the drumming, the vocals perfect the mix with malignant guttural horror. This song is one of those tracks you can imagine a super chaotic mosh pit occurring too, gotta appreciate that. The frenzied yet precise assault on the senses is awesome, with some gnarly pinch harmonics. The storming groove is the thing that makes this most enjoyable to me I think, the band just seem to continually churn out catchy but aggression packed material.
7. Escaping The Mortal Embodiment feels like an attack from the beginning drum intro, the convulsive tremolo picked, low tuned riffs and catatonically heavy drum fills. You know something damn gruesome is coming. The song is full of just battering instrumentals, each note hitting you incredibly hard. The morbid vocals sound absolutely killer and the mix is done to perfection. The Malignancy style harmonics really add a nice touch to the riffs. Taking things slower into new territory the bleaker drawn out arpeggiated chords sound killer and add a nice new sound to the album, while not lasting long before dropping us into the abyss once more. Absolutely intense piece of maniacal Metal right here, the best track in my opinion, with some really epic touches and atmospheric flourishes to it (including an almost blackened feel)!
8. Existence Denied is the final piece of this absolutely skull wrecking collective of Death Metal fury. For the second time we are introduced with a short sample that then kicks into just more groove laden, ferocious and incredibly tight, well written music. There has not been any major changes from track to track, but the band have clearly found their foothold and stuck to their guns. Lovely lead work certainly prevalent here along with some brutal snare battery too! Absolutely killer closing track which just lands the blow of the album to perfection. Awesome way to draw the album out too! Great work!

For the many of you who enjoyed the new Tomb Mold, Torture Rack, Guttural Instinct etc, this is another great piece of OSDM. The release is a cold, menacing slab of ferocious extremity, leaving a yearning for more gruesome old school Death Metal worship. Really enjoyed this material, hoping the band follow it up in the next couple years! The fact that this is the debut album (only an EP having been released last year) makes it even more impressive how impacting this album is! -9/10
