ALBUM REVIEW: Cemetery Lust – Rotting In Piss

Here is my review of the new album from CEMETERY LUST set for release on the 20th July on Hells Headbangers Records!

1. Midnight Invasion kicks straight in with raw, old school and downright brutal old school Death Metal. The vocals are hideously gruesome, the riffs full of tremolo picked madness and the drums blasting away like the end of days is near. For an opening song it is full of punch, no introduction needed, just pure attack. It is really groovy and well written music, very enjoyable first song.
2. Piss on Your Grave comes in with more catchy riffing, a real headbanger. If you prefer your Death Metal riffs more in the vein of Obituary, this song is more for you. The demonic vocals sound fantastic over the chaotic but very well played music. The production is full of hazy distortion and punch, but not in a way that loses the filthy edge of the music. This song is a bit less full-on than the previous but equally great with the contrast making it sound even sludgier.
3. Fatal Infestation is faster paced, more thrashy material, with a really nasty style of vocals, which I mean in a positive way. This is how Death Metal should be, ugly and hateful. The slower paced parts are so heavy with just so much malice and power in the simplistic but very effective songwriting. The guitar solo is really chaotic and very nicely pulled off. More ferocious Death Metal madness continues driving this song through perfectly.
4. Funeral Home Massacre brings in more slow paced and brutal waves of gnarly Death Metal. The following speeds are very fast and feature a full assault of the ears very nicely. The punishing speeds and instrumental aggression is topped of with raw vocals for the full OSDM experience. The use of reverb adds a level of dissonance that works very well to create a more Morbid Angel type of feeling to the track. The drums are absolutely hammered out with no holds barred and the heavy riffing of the guitar and bass certainly keeps the pace up. The maniacal and frantic solo sounds wicked, although not very technical, it has speed in abundance.
5. Bowels of Blasphemy is really groovy, the madness of the drums works very well with the guitars. Tons of meaty distortion is used giving it a really classic sound. The hellish vocals are actually very unique and unexpected so far, I am really enjoying them although for me they are slightly too loud in the mix but not to a point it ruins the release, it’s really damn good in fact. The blistering solo is totally killer, pretty short but it really added to the songs intense vibe.
6. I Am Trash takes the music even further into aggression and madness with the frantic Death Metal also reaching into Thrash and Punk territory in parts. It works really well with the vocals used that almost sound like Cronos from Venom. This is not your modern, tight and melodic Death Metal but something that sounds much older and darker.
7. Hideous Nature comes in with the force of a freight train and nothing to ease us in. Just even more barrages of dirty Death Metal fury. This song has a slightly catchier rhythm than others which to me really adds to the release. The groovy parts really make you want to see this live and get into some mosh pit anarchy. The gutturals that first appear in this song are absolutely wonderful, amazing work. This is my favourite song for sure.
8. Witches Seduction goes into more blistering, tremolo picked, hate-fuelled Metal. I am really enjoying the sheer attack of this album that has at no point subsided. The pure evil in the vocals is so menacing, with the growls reaching ridiculously low levels. The solo is much more reverb coated and also really well played with a lovely melody to its chaos. The fury continues once more and shows no sign of ending (thankfully).
9. Awaiting Execution is the ending track, and is slower in pace to begin with, giving a really nice drawn out atmosphere. The pounding and menacing assault of this song is just brutal and heavy as it can be. It has parts that briefly sound like Death but they are using raw aggression of technicality and progressive touches, which works just as well. The final track brings us to a close with no less aggression or fury than any of the other songs. The solo once more is sheer mayhem, which is awesome. Things slow down somewhat but certainly not before they can squeeze in yet more brutality. A really great closing piece.

If you, like me, are one of the many people who enjoyed the new albums from Tomb Mold and Torture Rack (both 20 Buck Spin), this release from Hells Headbangers must also be checked out. This is a bit more primal than the others but once again features amazingly executed old school Death Metal. It is pretty damn raw, but that adds to the meaty and filthy sound that Death Metal should have. Great stuff! -8.5/10
