ALBUM REVIEW: Witch Mountain (Self Titled)

After reviewing Orange Goblin’s new album I was sent an awesome package from their press manager “I Like Press”. One of the items was a CD of this new Witch Mountain album, here is my review!

1. Midnight starts the release kicking straight into low tuned doom riffs, a really atmospheric and slow start to the 5 track album. The female vocals work in a really classic rock way giving a more bluesy Doom Metal soundscape. The track is really melodic and easy to listen to, with additional screams adding some brutality to the mix, great stuff.
2. Mechanical World has a really cool opening verse which creeps up on you very nicely. A really interesting structure is used to create such a classic atmosphere, I can only compare it to a much more Doom Metal version of something like Blue Cheer. The song culminates into some nice lead guitar which is simple but very effective and more laid back rhythm sections with intricate but in no way fast over overbearing drums and gorgeously smooth vocals.
3. Burn You Down has a more melancholic funeral march sound to it. The atmosphere is tense and the tones are really warm and clear. The vocals are really haunting and the creeping in guitars with nice little drums fills sounds great. The dragging eerie vibe of the song is really enjoyable. It picks up to a more Iron Maiden like galloping pace going into more headbang worthy riffs.
4. Hellfire features horror like sampling adding to the atmosphere and giving us a breaking from the melodic heaviness and features lovely blues sounding singing which has a really unique approach to it!
5. Nighthawk opens with a really nice bass line and some guitar with absolutely tons of delay which sound really cool. The riffs flow beautifully and the last track is once again some really nice laid back music. This last track is really a gorgeous piece of songwriting with a stunning 70s feel to it. It feels like a female-fronted Black Sabbath which to me is a really interesting concept.

This album is a really nice 35 minutes of super laid back Doom / Stoner Metal with a really unique approach. Certainly worth a listen! -7/10
