ALBUM REVIEW: Burkhartsvinter – Hohenkrähen

Today I reviewing some really underground Black Metal from Germany!

  1. Aachland opens the album with bleak and dark feedback. The guitar riffs are dark and atmospheric with a raw production. The style to me is reminiscent of the bands fellow Germans Nargaroth. A really good opening piece.
  2. Hohenkrähen gives us a raw but honest atmosphere, the band are very clear about their opinions of high-end production. If you want something that sounds like 90s Nordic Black Metal demos alas, here it is. They play primitive but melodic and aggressive Black Metal very well. The guitars sound stunning, the drums play along very nicely and the vocals are demonic as hell. A great track.
  3. Under Satanic Command continues the hellishly evil Black Metal noise. Soundscapes are creating with walls of atmospheric guitar, skilful drums and hauntingly screamed vocals. The riffs are really well written and old school sounding.
  4. Frundsberg offers us yet more headbang worthy, devilish and unforgiving Black Metal mastery. Excellent and interesting song structure with very original work from the band. The full Black Metal assault is certainly experienced here.
  5. S.G.W.G.T.C. is yet more raw and evil sounding Black Metal, it has a very nice lack of in depth production, which works to the style perfectly. The riffs are actually pretty catchy and the atmosphere is purely malignant and hateful. This is pure Black Metal with no regard for how things may be progressed, which I am sure is the intention, much like that of Tsjuder. While some may prefer stuff with synths or whatever, this band could not care less, offering what is unadulterated and original Black Metal.
  6. Knights of the Deathcult closes the album with fast, hectic and downright awesome music. The whole release has been really enjoyable and the culmination happens here with blasts of relenting musical fury. A killer closing piece.

The release is raw, aggressive and uncompromising. Pure old school Black Metal from Germany. Great work! -7/10
