ALBUM REVIEW: Skognatt – Ancient Wisdom

I was contacted by a follower of my blog to check out his album, the project sharing my pseudonym only in reversed order, which grabbed my interest. I am always open to reviewing underground stuff of course so I said I would check it out!

1. Ancient Wisdom opens the album with lovely ambient noise and acoustic guitars, setting a really tranquil atmosphere. The riffs are raw yet catchy, the vocals sounding really bleak and the synths not overbearing. A solid opening track.
2. Xibalbá kicks in with nice 90s Norwegian Black Metal riffs, it’s doomy and catchy, but without stepping far out of line for atmospheric Black Metal. The addition of acoustic guitar parts reminds me of some DSBM stuff and it works really well. The walls of atmospheric noise are great!
3. World Apart has a really depressive and dissonant introduction with a perfect level of distortion used. This track has a more chaotic and aggressive atmosphere until accompanied by more lovely acoustic leads over barrages of distorted rhythm guitar and bass.
4. Thanatos has a much softer and more melancholic feeling, a really great interlude.
5. Dark Star goes back to the more aggressive side, but with tons of atmosphere and excellent production and songwriting. The use of throat singing sounds really cool as well.
6. Fallen + Outro closes the album with a lovely downtempo acoustic dominated track with really dark vocals and piano. Taake like upbeat riffs are utilised excellently and beautiful synths top it off. A great closing piece.

A very nice, original and well made piece of atmospheric Black Metal with great use of synths and acoustic guitar. This project reminds me a lot of Uaral which is a really great band to check out for the Depressive Black Metal fans here! -7.5/10
