Todays 3rd and final review is of the latest album of UK Extreme Metallers De Profundis!
- Obsidian Spires kicks straight into the precise aggression of extreme glory, raw vocals and melodic guitars with powerful bass and drums, this song does not mess around. Excellent melodies and really catchy songwriting. A great start.
- War Be Upon Him has a really nice brutal intro riff then the tempo picks up into old school death/thrash extremities. The songwriting and structure is unique and with speed also comes intricacy which some bands do not capture as well, but De Profundis do not fall into the lower ranks. Intense and genuinely gorgeous raw as hell extreme metal.
- Opiate For The Masses has a more 90s Death Metal feel, really nice riffs and catchy vocal/guitar hooks the galloping instrumentation over the blunt vocals sound really great and there is tons of atmosphere leaning into the more progressive side of Death Metal.
- Bastard Son Of Abraham has more amazing guitar/bass work with punchy drums and it is just super well written. The vocals are guttural and powerful and the attack is perfection. It is fast, technical but not at all arrogant with nice cleaner sounding leads somewhat reminiscent of Death.
- Martyrs clearly draws in the chaos of modern world, thrashy and catchy guitar riffs give in to the rapid drum beats and merge into a ferocious backing track to the passionately growled vocals. The solo has a really cool 80s strut to it which was a welcome but unexpected twist.
- Godforsaken has a more bleak and melancholic feel, not losing any momentum and continuing in the excellent vein set by the first 5 tracks. The lyrics are well written and the musicianship is clearly very intellectual and well orchestrated. The bass lines are really audible which is something a lot of bands sadly lack.
- Beyond Judgement has a more modern black-death attack and the tremolo picking over blasting drums and higher vocal register give a really intense and dark atmosphere. The song is nothing like any of the previous which gives the album diversity and a definite appeal to Black and Death metal fans alike.
- Bringer Of Light is the closing track and has influence from what I hear of bands like Bolt Thrower, with its very audible kicks and catchy riffs, tons of rhythm and great vocals. The atmosphere is killer and leads the album out beautifully.
A great and diverse release of pure Extreme Metal that is technical, atmospheric and offers something to almost every corner of the Heavy Metal subgenera. A fascinating and varied release. -8/10
