ALBUM REVIEW: Memoriam – The Silent Vigil

New album from UK Death Metallers Memoriam, featuring ex Bolt Thrower and Benediction members.

1. Soulless Parasite immediately kicks in the Old School Death Metal glory. Heavy sludgy paced riffs, brutal vocals and punchy drums. A killer opening track!
2. Nothing Remains is a bit faster, still grimy and evil sounding. It has the perfect Death Metal formula. Proof super low tuned guitars and pig squeals are NOT needed for brutality (although I like those things, this old school style is just as heavy).
3. From the Flames is more thrashy, a perfect moshing song! It sounds like something torn out of the 80s early Death Metal scene and is just glorious!
4. The Silent Vigil slows things down again with a nice melodic lead and simplistic drums and bass. The heavier rhythm guitars and brutal vocals come back but this is more alike something from the Swedish Death Metal scene like Entombed or At The Gates. A really cool track which breaks up the albums previous pace.
5. Bleed The Same continues from track 4 with its melodic style but bringing back the gritty sludge of tracks 1-3 and follows into some really nice tremolo picking and brutal chugging riffs. A real headbanger! Beautiful guitar work on this track.
6. As Bridges Burn is absolutely amazing, the best song so far. Epic, brutal, heavy as hell and amazing musicianship and vocal work. A masterpiece indeed.
7. The New Dark Ages is very groovy, super punchy and aggressive. Extremely nice hooks in both the instrumentation and vocals too. Very reminiscent of early Bolt Thrower with an addition of something punky too.
8. No Known Grave has a slightly doom intro with an interesting chord progression used giving it an almost ancient Egyptian sound (obviously in a way that is applicable to death metal). The slower drums really make all of the parts of the track stand out and a lack of compression has been used clearly for a nice wide mix. These elements together make for a crushing tone.
9. Weaponised Fear has a lovely dissonant intro followed by a rhythmic and pulsing verse. A very unique song with lots of atmosphere and excellent tone. Karl’s vocals are sounding so raw and brutal on this track, along with all the rest.

This second album from Memoriam follows perfectly from the debut “For The Fallen” and I am already looking forward to a 3rd release and to see them live again! -8/10
