This night is one I had waited a long time, 8 years to be precise, to happen. I was finally going to see Watain. Travelling to London in the early afternoon the excitement began, now to talk about the music.
Degial, the Swedish Death Metal band opened, an amazing old school feel to their sound which was just so aggressive! A perfect band to warm up the crowd for their fellow countrymen.
Watain. The lights went off, the intro music started and it was time to witness chaos. The band opened as they meant to go on, with energy, aggression, and pure hatred. The stage set involved flaming inverted crosses, an altar, skulls, meat and all one would expect from the band. The setlist itself was a mix of old and new material (all eras of Watain are enjoyed by me, so not complaints). The mosh pit was small but lethal, putting me on my ass within 30 seconds, but of course I didn’t care at all. I was held captive by the raw and dark atmosphere of the bands live ritual, they all played so fluently and with clear passion. This gig made the wait for those who had not seen the band entirely worth it.
