INTERVIEW: Tyrann

“Don’t make fashion of our Heavy Metal passion!” The declaration of one of my favourite bands to spring out of Sweden’s underground in the last few years… I am talking, of course, about TYRANN! After seeing them a couple of times and running into frontman Tobias, we got this interview nailed!

  1. Hey man! Can you introduce yourself and the band to those who still need to Face The Tyrant?

Tyrann is heavy metal in its purest form. We bring back the long-lost raw energy into the music. That’s it!

  2. Right, you put out your first demo tape in 2019, how was the reception to this kick-ass duo of tracks?

Nothing but good to be honest. We didn’t expect much, but the single sold out right away. The original plan was to do only one single, but we just kept going.

  3. A couple years later in 2021 we first heard the amazing “Djävulens Musik”. A short but instantly classic LP of pure Heavy Metal anthems. How did you write, record and generally concoct such a banger in this modern day and age?

The songs came together pretty quick after we released the first single. I personally like short and raw albums. Eight tracks is perfect for a heavy metal album. We recorded the drums, bass and vocals in studio Västberga, with Olle Granat, and the guitars in Joseph’s studio. From the music to the artwork, Djävulens Musik captures what Tyrann stands for.

4. Let’s talk about inspirations. Who fuels the fires of the tyrant? Which classics do you love and which fellow new bands are worth putting the gloves on and taking to the ring?

Bands like Tormentor and Hellhammer are big inspirations for Tyrann. That’s the energy we like to bring into heavy metal. Talking about new bands, Century from Stockholm is the absolute best in my opinion.

5. Merely two years later, we got 2023’s “Besatt”. Following largely from the debut in every way, this record felt like a very natural continuation. As before, can you give us some insights into how it was crafted and its inspirations?

I guess the biggest difference from the first album is that Besatt has more 80s black metal in it. Especially in tracks like Transsylvanien and Rå Energi. There’s certain elements in black metal that go really well with heavy metal.

6. Now we can talk about the last release, a split with your regular touring mates and fellow Swedes Century. Aside from the shows together, what made you want to go back to the old school underground even more so than usual with a split 7”?

Me and Staffan from Century went for a drink and came up with the idea of a split a few years back. We are on the same label, Electric Assault Records, so everything fell into place smoothly once we got started. Tyrann did a cover of Imperiet, a Swedish rock band that was a big inspiration for us. I wanted to do that song for a long time.

7. Speaking of touring, you guys are very selective with shows (I’ve been lucky enough to catch two; Keep It True and Metal Magic). What makes a show worth Tyrann lugging the amps out of storage? Which shows have been your favourites and where are you dying to play still?

All our shows have been great so far, fantastic crowds everywhere, but the Stockholm show at Hus 7 is my personal favorite. Stockholm is a tough place to play, but this time it was pure magic from the start. It would be awesome to go to Japan in the future!

8. Finally, I hear a third album is being recorded. What can we expect from you guys next?

After finishing the Face the Tyrant Tour ’24 in France this September, we will go into the studio to work on our third album that will be out in 2026. However, 2025 will be a great year! We will have a nice surprise for all fans of real heavy metal!

9. Last words are you, see you on the other side!

Thanks for the interview and thanks to everyone who supports us!
